RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
