The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
